The active ingredient in the BIOBARRIER® is trifluralin, which is commonly used in weed control. Trifluralin is a pre-emergent herbicide that is commonly used to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds on a variety of food crops and residential sites.

The trifluralin in BIOBARRIER® is released in a gaseous form into the soil and creates a small zone (about 50mm) where roots won’t grow. The product is Non-Systemic, meaning it won’t harm the roots or the rest of the tree. Systemic herbicides work their way through the plant’s transport system to target and kill all of its areas. This product does not do this.

Trifluralin is a widely used herbicide will provide selective, pre-emergent control of germinating annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in agricultural and horticultural crops i.e. they kill weeds before they grow.

BIOBARRIER® prevents the tree roots growing in that area but does not harm them.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rates trifluralin’s toxicity somewhere between table salt and sugar. While there is concern putting chemicals into the ground, this chemical isn’t leaching into the soil and spreading. It is staying in a gaseous form within a few centimetres of where the material is laid.

Used For:

Barrier Root Control is used to prevent the roots of trees or other plants penetrating structures like concrete pathways, driveways, drains, pools or any structure where other physical barriers have failed to to prevent root penetration and damage.

Since the system includes a standard drainage fabric, BIOBARRIER® allows water, air and nutrients to pass through, not adversely affecting soil hydrology.

Installation instructions are available in the attached documents. It is critical gloves are warn and the product is not exposed to direct sunlight or heat before installation for any length of time as this will result in premature triggering of the release of the chemical and mean the BIOBARRIER® it is less effective.
